| | About the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt: (U.S. Fighter Aircraft) The P-47 was one of the most famous fighter planes of WW II. Although originally conceived as a lightweight interceptor, the P-47 developed as a heavyweight fighter and made its first flight on May 6, 1941. Nicknamed "JUG", the P-47-D was one of the most important and most produced fighters of the American Air Force during the WWII. Although the P-47D was the largest and heaviest single-seat aircraft to see service in the Second World War, it became a high speed and high altitude capable fighter when powered by the huge 2000hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 "Double Wasp" engine and a unique supercharging system. Shaped with a sharp upper ridge, the early types of P-47D were given a name "Razorback". During the war, the Razorbacks served as striking fighters and sometimes escort fighters of the allied bombers when conducting raids over Germany. The latter versions of the P-47 Thunderbolt (Starting with the later types of the D Model), had bubble canopies which improved overall vision for the pilots. Also, a special version was created called the P-47M model. Evolved as a special high-speed variant of the powerful P-47 Thunderbolt air-fighter series, the P-47M was the fastest US fighter aircraft in WWII. The first P-47M came into service in December 1944, and rushed immediately into the 56th Fighter Group in Europe. It was specifically produced to counter the Luftwaffe. |
