| | About the Chance Voight F4U Corsair (Fighter Airplane): The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was a fighter aircraft that saw service in World War II and the Korean War. Goodyear-built Corsairs were designated FG and Brewster-built aircraft F3A. Due to visibility problems on landing caused by a combination of the pilot's position and the length of the nose, which made landing tricky for poorly trained pilots, as well as the availability of the more docile Hellcat, Corsair use aboard U.S. carriers was delayed. After some modifications to the landing gear, repositioning of the seat, addition of the stall block on the starboard wing, and landing technique changes to keep the LSO (landing signal officer)in view while coming aboard, Corsairs saw reliable U.S. carrier service toward the end of 1944. When the aircraft finally saw combat, it was a superb fighter compared to its contemporaries, achieving a 10-11 to 1 victory ratio. 2,140 Enemy aircraft downed. Corsair losses in WW2 were as follows; by combat 189, by enemy anti-aircraft 349, operation during action sorties 230, on other flights 692, destroyed aboard ship or on ground 164. Growing pains aside, Marine Corps squadrons readily took to the radical new fighter. During the war, Corsair production expanded beyond Vought to include Brewster (F3A) and Goodyear (FG) models. Allied forces flying the aircraft in WW II included the British Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Eventually, more than 12,500 F4Us would be built, comprising sixteen separate models. The F4U Corsair was the hero of the Pacific. The signature bent wing design was initially construed as a compromise to accommodate the big engine, a big propeller to maximize the engine output, and short Carrier Capable landing gear. The bent wing solved all the problems and as an unknown biproduct, it actually increased capable airspeed. The Corsair was primarily assigned to the Marines in the Pacific, most noteworthy of which was Colonel Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep Squadron. |
